Welcome to our little corner of the internet! I’m Jess and I’ll be your hostess. My partner, Allan, is here too but he will likely keep a lower profile—mostly he’ll hold the light shield and grunt that the food is getting cold while I’m taking pictures of it. We’re home chefs drawing on our hapa heritages to fill our bellies with the most delicious food we can cook up in our little home in Southern California.

This blog, if nothing else, is a place for us to  document our favorite meals and culinary adventures together. We’re not going to try and pretend to be culinary masters, because we certainly are not. By day, I work in higher education and Allan is in the medical field. He did major in nutrition during undergrad, but apparently that's more about human physiology and organic chemistry than becoming the next Food Network Star…it’s a real bummer.

We got more serious about cooking when we moved in together three years ago. We found that we much preferred spending our evenings at home with our dogs than going out on the town and paying for overpriced drinks. Also, I have a boatload of food allergies that limit our restaurant options and Allan has seen me go into anaphylactic shock enough times that he doesn’t always trust people to be careful enough when preparing my food. We enjoy the peace of mind of knowing every ingredient on our plates and having the flexibility customize everything to our liking. That being said, our recipes are free of dairy, eggs, nuts, peanuts and shellfish, but who’s to say you can’t add those things when you create them :) Allan will often plop an egg on his avocado toast and ramen and add copious amounts of dairy-cheese to his tacos.
